Block of the Month – Summer 2022

The summer Block of the Month celebrates the 25th anniversary edition of Dear Jane: The Two Hundred and Twenty-Five Patterns from the 1863 Jane A Stickle Quilt book by Brenda Papadakis.

Each month, May thru August, we’ll look at 3 block patterns for a total of 12 blocks. An in-person meeting on the first Sunday of the month and a Zoom meeting the following Tuesday allow all members to participate. Patterns are emailed at least 3 days prior to the meeting.  Click for Schedule and Details.

The meeting includes discussion and demos of various techniques found in the blocks.  You can stay and sew your blocks in the clubroom Sunday afternoon. The leaders will be around to offer advice and assistance.

All skill levels are welcome. The 12 selected blocks range from easy to moderately challenging. Patterns are provided for the original 4.5” and an enlarged 12” block. Each block pattern has an option for traditional pieced templates and modern rotary cutter methods. Some blocks have a paper-piecing option. The demos also include alternate methods and short cuts for curved-piecing, appliqué, and y-seams.

Cost:  FREE.  You do need to register for either the Sunday or Tuesday sessions in order to receive the pattern email.  Click for Fabric Quantity and Suggestions

The Summer 2022 Block of the Month leaders are Jackie Iverson and Jacque Humphries.

Winter Mystery Quilt

Several members participated in the 2021/2022 Bonnie Hunter Winter Mystery, Rhododendron Trail. It was so much fun that we want to make this an annual activity.

Bonnie announces the theme and colors on Halloween. The clues start on Friday after Thanksgiving and are posted each Friday for 7 to 8 weeks.

Cost:  FREE   More details coming this fall.

Sew-Ins and Special Projects

Sew-Ins are announced now and then for members to gather in the club room for sewing with a common goal.  Recent Sew-ins produced Feminine Hygiene kits for women and girls displaced by the war in Ukraine, pajamas for foster kids with Arizona Helping Hands, dresses and other items for students and the community near the Navajo mission school in Rock Point, and school bags for local classrooms.

The Rip ‘N Sew club has a long history of sewing for communities here in Arizona and around the world. Members are encouraged to suggest and lead sew-ins and special projects.

Announcements are made in the weekly email newsletter and the posted on the clubroom bulletin board.
